Last week's publication of the latest draft of the "NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards", which included G.hn in the list of "standards identified for implementation" has had a significant impact on the industry.
Brian Santo at CED Magazine has a good story on the long term implications of this decision::
Thinking several moves ahead of the game, the HomeGrid Forum is on the verge of getting the new G.hn standard approved for use in Smart Grid applications by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). [...]
Most devices that consume or monitor energy and that are connected to AC power can benefit from G.hn technology. Examples include smart electricity meters, heating and air conditioning systems, electrical appliances, lightning systems, TVs and other devices. G.hn can also be used to establish a secure communication channel between Plug-in Electrical Vehicles (PEV) and Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) found in distributed charging stations.
Dan O'Shea, one of the IPTV experts at FierceIPTV, wrote this:
Meanwhile, the National Institute of Standards and Technology recently approved G.hn, the home network standard emerging from the International Telecommunications Union, to support smart grid applications like household power management.
These movements suggest that broadband service providers have as much a chance as utility companies to lead the charge into residential smart grid architectures and services. Telephony reported this week that one speaker at the FTTH Conference & Expo in Houston suggested that small telcos and utility companies in particular should partner up.
I like the idea that both telcos and cable TV companies can make a difference in the smart grid market because they already have more interactive relationships with residential consumers than most utilities do.
